 Pokrovka Street

Pokrovka street (in 1940-1992 Chernyshevskogo Street) goes from Armyansky Lane to Zemlyanoy Val Square and runs between Myasnitskaya Street and Voroncovo Pole Street. It crosses Pokrovskie Vorota Square. The modern buildings of the street date back to the 19th-20th centuries. The street was named after the Church of Holy Protection of the God's Mother or Holy Protection in Sadekh (next to prince's gardens) and was first mentioned in 1488. The church (at first the Cathedral of Pokrovsky Monastery, later - a parish church) was pulled down in about 1778 during the reconstruction of the Razumovskys' manor.
