Monument to the first printer Ivan Fyodorov

The monument to the first printer Ivan Fyodorov, the founder of the first Russian printed book, is one of the most famous in the city. It was established in 1909 in front of the Synodalinaya printing-house. Now the monument is located near the house number 2 in Tetatralny Proezd.
The monument was opened on the 12th of October 1909 in the presence of city officials and representatives of various organizations and was accompanied by a religious procession. The place that was selected for the monument is historical: nearby in Nikolskaya Street are located Chambers of former sovereign’s Printing House erected in the 17th century on the place of the printing house of Ivan Fyodorov. Here in the time of Peter the Great came out the first Russian newspaper "Vedomosti". However, now the monument stands not there where it was installed in 1909: at first in 1934 during the expansion of Teatralny Passage and the demolition of Kitay-Gorod wall it was moved deeper in the stret, then in 1990 it was moved closer to the hotel "Metropol".
