 Worker and Kolhoz Woman 


     "Worker and Kolhoz Woman " is an outstanding monument of monumental art, "the ideal and symbol of the Soviet era”. The monument represents a dynamic sculptural group of two figures with raised hammer and sickle over their heads. The author of the monument was Vera Mukhina; the concept and compositional plan were created by architect Boris Iofan. The monument is made from chrome-nickel stainless steel. The height is about 25 m (the height of the pavilion-pedestal is 33 m). The total weight is 185 tons.
      The sculpture was created for the Soviet pavilion at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937.
     In the period from 2003 to 2009 the monument was under reconstrucion. During the reconstruction the supporting framework of the composition was significantly strengthened, all parts of the sculptures were cleaned and cured against corrosion. The sculpture was installed on a new specially erected for it pavilion-pedestal.
