The State Museum of GULAG History was founded in 2001.
The exposition falls into three parts:
1) Historical – documentary
2) Art ( works of painters, sculpture, graphics)
3) Reconstruction of the labor camp facilities: the police officer`s office, part of the barrack, dungeon, stand of visual propaganda.
One of the core object of the exposition is the map with all such large camps and special camps (1948-1956). The map gives an opportunity to understand the scope of reprisals in the USSR.
The museum exposition tells us about ordinary people`s life fell victims of the Soviet repressive policy and were sentenced to labor camp imprisonment. The museum collection comprises stitch works by prisoners, their clothes, dishware, and beside that, bullets found on places of mass reprisals. Moreover, there are stands in the museum that are devoted to famous people`s lives who one or another way were influenced by reprisals (for example, stands about Bulat Okudgava, Georgiy JJenov).
The routes of the tours go far outside the exposition hall. The guides are always happy to hold thematic walking tours and tours by bus such as “Moscow in years of Stalin`s reprisals with a visit to Daniilovsky Convent”, “Architecture of Moscow of the 20s -50s of the 19th c.”, “Lubyanka in years of Stalin`s terror”
