Hill of Respectful Salutation. Moscow excursions

The Hill of Respectful salutation is a sloping hill to the west of Moscow’s downtown between the Setun River and the Filka River. The Hill of Respectful Salutation used to be located far away from Moscow, and a view of the city and its surroundings opened from its peak. Travelers often used to stop here to look at Moscow and bow before it, hence the name of the hill. Now the Hill of Respectful Salutation is located in the eastern part of Victory Park which is a memorial complex of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 in Moscow. The Hill of Respectful Salutation was already mentioned in 16th century documents. There, in an elevated place, important persons and foreign embassies were welcomed with bows. Aware of this historic fact, it was upon the Hill of Respectful Salutation that Napoleon waited for the keys to the Kremlin. Fate wanted to turn the way at the Hill of Respectful Salutation into the Victory way; at first, over the French, and then over the German troops. The first proposal to erect a monument to the popular heroic deed was made in 1942 (architect Ya. Chernikhovskiy). But it was impossible to implement it at a time of war. A memorial granite mark with the inscription: “Here will be erected a monument to the Victory of the Soviet People in the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War” was installed on the Hill of Respectful Salutation on February 23, 1958. It was then that trees were planted there and a park named after the Victory was founded. In the 1990s, the Victory memorial complex was built in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Victory. In 2003, a chapel was erected in commemoration of Spanish volunteers killed in the Great Patriotic War was opened in the Memorial area.
