M. V. Lomonosov Moscow State University (MGU) is Moscow’s leading and largest higher education institute, the national science and culture centre, one of the oldest universities of Russia. The MGU comprises nine research institutes, 39 faculties, and over 300 departments. Over 50 thousand people study at the University. The University is comprised of over 600 buildings and facilities with a total area of 1 million square metres. Foundation of the University was proposed by I. I. Shuvalov and M. V. Lomonosov. The decree to found the University was signed by Empress Elizaveta Petrovna on January 12 (25), 1755. In commemoration of the day of signing the decree, the University celebrates ‘Tatyana Day’ every year on January 25. The first lectures in the University were given on April 26, 1755. Count Shuvalov became the 1st curator of the University. Since 1992, the MGU’s rector has been Viktor Antonovich Sadovnichiy, who holds a PhD in physics and mathematics.
