 Patriarchal Palace. Moscow excursions

The Patriarchal Palace is a building in the Moscow Kremlin area located to the north of the Assumption Cathedral and Ivan the Great belfry. It was built in 1635-1656 by Russian masters Antip Konstantinov and Bazhen Ogurtsov and commissioned by Patriarch Nikon. The richest patriarchal vestry was located here. Under Peter I, the Palace harboured the Synod’s Moscow office. The vestry and the Cathedral were damaged during an artillery bombardment in 1917. In 1929, a 17th century iconostasis from the destroyed Ascension Monastery was transported to the Cathedral.
